McLaren Reveals New Ultralight Roadster

McLaren has just announced the latest expansion in its supercar lineup. This one's a roadster, and the company is saying that the open-cockpit car "promises purest driving experience yet."

Of course, that's what McLaren says with just about every new vehicle they release. At that rate, they must be down to just the essential oils of the driving experience by now. The new car doesn't have a name just yet. But since it will sit in the Ultimate Series lineup, the name for the company's top cars, in between the Senna and Speedtail, we're guessing it'll be an actual name and not a series of numbers.

McLaren says the new roadster will be different from the mission statements of the Senna and Speedtail. The Senna's aiming at being the ultimate track car that you happen to be able to drive to the circuit, and the Speedtail's lock on aerodynamic efficiency. Instead, the new car is aimed at "offering the purest distillation of road-focused driving pleasure and an unrivalled sense of driver connection with the surrounding environment."

The rendering doesn't quite reveal all the details, but it does show a car with no windshield, no top, and just a pair of speedster-style bubbles behind the driver and passenger. McLaren says about the styling "classical roadster proportions, elegant sweeping lines and low-profile dihedral doors all reflect the car’s singular purpose as a thrilling road car dedicated to the love of driving."

Like all McLarens, this new model will get an all carbon chassis. The company says it will be their lightest car ever. It'll also be powered by a version of the twin-turbo V8 from the Senna. It makes 789 hp in that car. The new model will arrive on sale late next year, priced between the Senna and Speedtail. Though with those at £750,000 and £2.1 million, respectively, that's a wide range. It'll be limited to just 399 units.
