Jaguar has given us a stunning look at the future of the hypercar. One that's powered by electricity, borrows design elements from some of the brand's most gorgeous offerings, and can hit 100 km/h in under two seconds. We hope that it gives us a glimpse into what the future of the British brand has in store, but even if it doesn't, they'll let just about anyone drive it starting later this year. The only catch: It was designed for a video game.
It's called the Vision GT Coupe, and it takes inspiration from the iconic C-Type and D-Type racers of the past but puts a decidedly futuristic twist on those shapes. The driveline is influenced by Jaguar's I-Type and I-Pace eTropy electric racers, but no matter how conceptual this concept is, you'll have the chance to pilot one. Because this virtual concept car was designed as part of the Vision GT project put on by Polyphony Digital's Gran Turismo.
That's right, you'll be able to enjoy this one from the comfort of your living room through Gran Turismo Sport, starting in December. Considering it has three electric motors delivering a total of 1,006 hp and 885 lb-ft of torque, a digital world is probably the best place to do it. That reset button is handy when you're offering that much performance. The concept is designed with augmented reality side glass to give you more information, but the basic cluster is inspired by vintage Smiths gauges to remind you of the car's heritage.
Jaguar handed the task of designing this stunning concept to some of its up-and-coming designers. "This project has been completely led by our young designers and represents a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for them to create a vehicle steeped in our incredible heritage but pushing the boundaries of future design," said Jaguar Design Director Julian Thomson. They've certainly hit the task of making this concept car look unmistakably Jaguar without just making a retro-styled D-Type. If this is what Jag's electric future will look like, sign us up.
How do you give an electric video game race car a soundtrack? You use a gas-powered car, of course. The Vision GT Coupe gets its sound using brand new recordings of the Long Nose D-Type that finished on the podium at Le Mans in 1957 and its 3.8L race-spec inline-six engine, with those sounds "manipulated and woven into a futuristic and distinctive electric soundtrack."
So fire up the console and get ready to drive the Vision GT Coupe, along with the rest of the Vision GT series, when it arrives to your Playstation later this year.
