Ford's latest electrifying news means that it's van time. The Transit is going EV with a new all-electric version of the van set to arrive in Canada for the 2022 model year.
The automaker says that the Transit is the best-selling cargo van in the world, and this new version is set to help keep it that way. "Commercial vehicles are a critical component to our big bet on electrification," said Jim Farley, chief operating officer, Ford Motor Company, in a release. "As leaders in this space, we are accelerating our plans to create solutions that help businesses run better, starting with our all-electric Transit and F-150. This Ford Transit isn’t just about creating an electric drivetrain, it’s about designing and developing a digital product that propels fleets forward."
Ford isn't talking range or power just yet, but it is hyping the benefits of an electric commercial van we'll see next year or possibly even late this year. One of benefits is reduced maintenance costs, thanks to the lack of fluid changes and because EVs generally take longer to go through a set of brake pads. There is also the lower operating cost of not using gas or diesel fuel, and possible tax incentives for EV purchases. Ford also points out that electric vans can be used indoors where there is limited ventilation, and places with noise restrictions, all situations where a conventional van isn't up to the task.
The vans will also be available loaded with smart technology designed to make work easier. Tech like Ford Data Services with live tracking, geofencing, and diagnostics, plus driver aids standard like pre-collision assist with pedestrian detection, post-collision braking, and lane-keeping assist.
Electric Transits will be part of Ford's US$11.5 billion investment in electrification that will include the Mustang Mach-E and the already-announced electric F-150.
