We won't call it a genesis every time there's a new Genesis, but the luxury brand has just debuted a new G70, the compact sports sedan from the automaker that's challenging the German and Japanese luxury staples. The 2022 Genesis G70 gets the brand's new styling from the G80 but changes have also been made to the powertrain, infotainment, and driver assistance features. Oh, and there's now a drift mode.
The new design takes the stacked two-bar LED headlights and taillights from the G80 and applies it quite well to this smaller model. The front fascia sports a larger grille, though it remains on the tasteful side. New taillights adorn a new bumper and rear diffuser.
Inside, the most prominent change is the new 10.25-inch touchscreen display sitting atop the centre stack with a new user interface unique to Genesis. The wireless phone dock is tweaked to improve charging speeds, and it appears to be a little bit bigger to help fit increasingly large new phones. Genesis says that the instrument cluster has also been enlarged to make it easier to read. The infotainment system now supports over-the-air updates to keep it fresh down the line.
Under the hood of the refreshed 2022 Genesis G70 will be what the company calls the "G70’s proven turbocharged 2.0-litre inline four-cylinder and twin-turbocharged 3.3-litre V6." While power figures weren't quoted on the Canadian version of the release, the international version offered showed the same 252 hp from the four-cylinder and 365 from the V6 and we'd expect that for Canada. New for the V6 is a Sport package that adds a variable valve exhaust for a more aggressive sound on demand. The new Dynamic AWD system offers a built-in drift mode, Genesis says, for some on-track sideways fun. A Sport+ mode on all engines tweaks the engine and transmission mapping for sportier driving. The rear-wheel-drive option appears to have been dropped and the G70 will offer standard all-wheel-drive in Canada.
The G70 will get a digital key with NFC technology so you can access the car using your phone, intelligent front lighting, and a built-in dashcam. It will also get a suite of active safety features including safe exit warning, forward and blind spot collision avoidance assist, rear cross-traffic collision avoidance, nav-based adaptive cruise, and multi-collision braking.
The 2022 Genesis G70 arrives in South Korea this year but will hit Canadian showrooms later in 2021. Expect pricing closer to the car's arrival on our shores.
