Ford has just launched the most powerful F-150 Raptor pickup yet. The 2023 Ford F-150 Raptor R gets a 5.2L supercharged V8 that sends 700 horses to the standard 37-inch tires by way of stronger axles and upgraded suspension components to help you launch it farther and higher than you ever actually should.
Yes, this is the same engine that Ford puts in the Mustang Shelby GT500. There are a few changes, like a recalibrated supercharger with a revised pulley to give it more shove off-road. It now makes 640 lb-ft of torque, an upgrade over the Mustang's 625.
For pickup-truck durability, the engine has new cast stainless steel exhaust manifolds. Ford Performance has also added a new oil cooler and a deeper oil pan that can handle steeper grades. A new air inlet boosts air intake volume by 66 percent.
The Raptor R gets a 10-speed automatic transmission calibrated for the new engine. Inside the case are a new torque converter and a stronger rear output assembly. The front axle is new with a stronger carrier and ribbed cover to cope with the torque. The aluminum drive shaft has a larger diameter for the same reason.
A new active exhaust lets the driver pick from Normal, Sport, and Quiet modes, as well as the extra-loud Baja setting to really make your neighbours happy.
The suspension uses 24-inch coil springs and extra long trailing arms to let the 37-inch tires fit and move under the truck. Fox Live Valve shocks take care of controlling those big tires, and can adjust damping hundreds of times per second.
Payload is unchanged from the standard Raptor at 635 kg (1,400 lb), but max towing is up 227 kg (500 lb) to 3,946 kg (8,700 lb) with the new engine.
Ford has some styling changes too, including a one-inch taller power dome on the hood and black fender flares. Code Orange accents include the R badge in the grille, and Ford has given the Raptor R a special graphics pack for the rear fenders.
Inside, Raptor R has Recaro seats in black leather and suede, along with carbon fibre on the doors and instrument panel.
The order books for this extreme truck are open today. Production is set to start late this year. Pricing for the pickup is not yet available, but the standard 3.5L V6 EcoBoost Raptor starts from around $94,000.
