The last of three variants of the 2023 Kia Sportage crossover is ready to arrive at dealers this fall. The plug-in hybrid version offers buyers both more power than other Sportage powertrains as well as more efficiency. With a 55-km electric driving range, the 2023 Kia Sportage PHEV will start from $44,995.
The Kia Sportage increased in size significantly with the 2023 redesign, so it has more cargo and passenger space. It launched with one engine, a 2.5L four-cylinder making 187 hp and 178 lb-ft of torque with an estimated fuel economy of 9.5 L/100 km combined with AWD.
A second engine option, a 1.6L turbo four-cylinder hybrid model making 227 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque arrived shortly after. This one offered an estimated 6.2 L/100 km combined.
The Sportage PHEV pairs that same 1.6L turbo-four with a more powerful electric motor and a 13.8-kWh lithium-ion battery. The result is 261 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque, along with the ability to travel up to 55 km on a single charge. Fuel economy is estimated at 2.8 Le/100 km combined on gas and electric or 6.7L/100 km on gas power only. All-wheel drive is standard and Kia uses a six-speed automatic transmission in place of the more common (in PHEVs) CVT for a more conventional powertrain feel.
Kia will offer the 2023 Sportage PHEV in two well-equipped trim levels. The first is EX Premium, a $7,400 upgrade over the gas-only equivalent model. It comes equipped with forward collision avoidance, lane following, smart cruise control, and heated and ventilated front seats.
An SX trim starts from $48,395 and includes Harman Kardon audio, rear parking collision avoidance, Highway Drive Assist, blind spot cameras, surround view monitor, and remote smart park assist.
The two 2023 Kia Sportage PHEV models will show up at dealerships this fall. While the official list hasn't yet been updated, we expect them to qualify for full federal ZEV incentives, as well as provincial low-emission vehicle incentives.
