TRX Evolves into 6-Cylinder 2025 Ram 1500 RHO

The full-sized Ram 1500 pickup is all new for 2025, and this year, there's not a V8 to be found in the truck's lineup. What does that mean for the supercharged V8 off-road beast that was the Ram 1500 TRX? It means a new inline-six that might not make quite as much power but comes with a slightly lower price and all the off-road upgrades. Welcome the 2025 Ram 1500 RHO.

Under the hood of the Ram RHO is the company's new 3.0L Hurricane inline-six. It's the high-output version of the straight six, making 540 hp and 521 lb-ft of torque.

That's down 162 hp and even more torque compared with the 6.2L supercharged TRX it replaces, but always eager to make lemonade from lemons, Ram points out the new engine weighs 150 pounds less than the V8. It should also return almost double the fuel economy, and while it won't match up to the Ford F-150 Raptor R, it makes 100 hp more than the 3.5L V6 Raptor.

It won't have the sound of the old V8 and its supercharged whine, but Ram has worked to rectify the issue. The six gets a special dual exhaust that offers low restriction (which means more noise) compared with other Ram 1500s. Surprisingly, Ram quotes acceleration figures just a few tenths slower than the V8 to 100 km/h and through the quarter mile.

The rest of the TRX's off-road equipment is still along for the ride starting with those wide fenders. Under the fenders are 35-inch Goodyear Wrangler all-terrain tires and adaptive Bilstein Black Hawk e2 dampers. The shocks are bolted to a long travel suspension with a two-inch lift and Ram has beefed up the truck's frame.

Other off-road features include an airbox designed to drain more water and an air filter with easy access for "a quick field clean" if things get too dusty. It has a BorgWarner full-time active transfer case to split power to the four tires and a 2.64:1 low-range ratio. The transfer case allows flat towing if you want this beast behind your camper on the highway.

A luxurious cabin includes 12-way seats with heat, ventilation, and massage. It has a digital dashboard with RHO-specific graphics and a 14.5-inch centre display screen. The drive mode selector includes the usual on and off-road modes, as well as valet mode.

Ram is taking orders now for the 2025 Ram 1500 RHO, and deliveries should start in the third quarter of this year. Pricing for the truck starts from $115,790, down just a bit from last year's V8 at $119,670.
