After making all-wheel drive standard last year, Mazda's changes to the 2023 CX-5 are small but welcome, with cylinder deactivation now a standard feature. Also new is a Rhodium White Metallic paint colour that joins Mazda's growing list of very premium paint finishes on attainably priced vehicles.
The 2.5L Skyactiv four-cylinder, the base engine for CX-5, gains cylinder deactivation as standard for 2023. This lets it shut down cylinders when you don't need full power to help save fuel. Mazda didn't provide 2023-specific figures, but 2022's numbers show a fuel economy improvement of 0.3 L/100 km city and highway for an estimate of 9.9/7.9 L/100 km city/highway.
2023 also sees Mazda add new drive modes to CX-5. Called Mazda Intelligent Drive Select, the toggle control adds Off-Road. Pre-Mi-Drive, as the new system is called, it offered only Normal and Sport modes.
Joining Mazda's Soul Red Crystal and Machine Grey Metallic paints is Rhodium White Metallic. Mazda calls it "a pure white inspired by Japanese aesthetics finding beauty in simplicity," and says that "the paint's fine grain accentuates the shadows on the surface of the vehicle." We'll need to see this one in person, but Mazda has offered some amazing paint choices in the past, with Soul Red high on that list.
Radar cruise control, Smart Brake Support, pedestrian detection, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert and more remain part of Mazda's advanced driver assistance suite.
The 2023 Mazda CX-5 goes on sale this summer, starting from $30,900. That's an increase of $200 over 2022.
