Volkswagen has just fired up production of the 2023 ID.4 electric vehicle at its plant in Chattanooga, Tenn. The factory capacity, which had been used to build the Passat sedan, should add 7,000 units per month, helping cut long wait times for the EV. Along with the new factory come upgrades to content and tech features for the EV.
Starting with the 2023 model year, all ID.4 models for Canada will come from the U.S. plant. Previously, we were getting cars imported from facilities in Germany already struggling to meet European demand.
The 2023 Volkswagen ID.4 will initially be available with an 82-kWh battery and rear or all-wheel drive. The MSRP for the rear-drive model, badged the ID.4 Pro, is $47,995, with ID.4 Pro AWD models starting at $52,995 before destination fees. While this is an increase from 2022, it's a relatively small one at $3,000.
Volkswagen is offering upgrades to the interior and exterior for the new model year, including a standard 12-inch infotainment display and new seats that blend faux leather with recycled fabric sections. There are gloss black highlights on the front bumper and three new wheel options.
Also new for 2023 is cyclist detection, added to the existing forward collision warning system with autonomous emergency braking and pedestrian detection. IQ.Drive, Volkswagen's highway driving assistance suite, is also standard on all models. It has adaptive cruise control and lane guidance and adds Park Assist Plus and driver-initiated lane change functionality for 2023.
A new ID.4 variant with a smaller 62-kWh battery will go into production in the fourth quarter of this year. No range figures have been announced yet, but the model will have a lower starting price of $43,995.
Lastly, both 82-kWh battery-equipped models are getting a range boost for 2023. The AWD model's range climbs 16 km to an estimated 410 km. While official numbers aren't yet available for RWD Pro models, the 2022 model year had a max range of 422 km.
2023 Volkswagen ID.4 units are expected to hit dealers in Canada this fall.
