2024 Volkswagen ID.4 EV Updated with More Range

Volkswagen continues to make small but significant updates to its ID.4 electric crossover. Following infotainment updates in 2022 and an upgraded 62-kWh model in 2023, the company has now added a new display along with a new rear-wheel drive unit to offer more power and more range for models with the larger battery pack.

The 2024 Volkswagen ID.4 will be offered in Canada with a smaller 62-kWh battery pack, and Pro-badged models get an 82-kWh pack. It's the latter that gets the drivetrain changes.

Volkswagen says the new drive system is its highest-torque EV motor yet. It has a new rotor with strong permanent magnets, an improved stator with more windings, and a heat sink for its water cooling. VW has also improved the single-speed gearbox for reduced friction, and the electric power inverter is also new.

Rear-drive Pro models now make 282 hp, up 81 hp from last year and the same improvement over the small pack model. AWD models make 335 hp, 40 more than last year. Range improvements might be more important for EV buyers, and the RWD Pro and Pro S models can now drive 45 km further for a total of 468 km. AWD models now have a maximum range of 423 km. ID.4s with the smaller pack are still limited to 332 km.

Pro models are also the only grades to get the new screen. It is a 12.9-inch centre display that adds backlit sliders to control temperature settings. Volkswagen has revised the entire system to help make adjusting climate controls and accessing the infotainment easier for drivers.

For 2024, Volkswagen has added optional ventilated front seats and a nine-speaker Harman/Kardon audio system.

Pricing for the 2024 Volkswagen ID.4 starts from $48,495 for the smaller pack and $52,995 for 82 kWh Pro models. The 2024 ID.4 is available at dealers now.
