Acura Precision EV Concept Previews Sleek New SUV

Acura's first electric vehicle is expected to arrive in 2024, and the Precision EV concept is our preview of the design language the brand has planned when its EVs arrive.

Back in 2016, Acura debuted the original Precision concept, which was a sedan that set the tone for the current generation of Acuras. Its sharp lines and large diamond grille were big departures from what the automaker was selling at the time. While this new SUV concept isn't as radical, it's a move forward for the brand.

"Precision Crafted Performance" was the theme Acura gave its designs with that 2016 concept car, and the automaker says the Precision EV embodies that ethos. As such, many design cues cross over almost unchanged, including the long hood with its diagonal creases and the "chicane" lighting signature of the front and rear lamps.

Other parts of the design, though, are new. The Diamond Pentagon grille, for example, gets filled up with diamond-shaped LED lights to create a more modern face for the EV. Look at the corners and you'll see what Acura calls "particle glitch" lighting elements. It's a theme repeated on the wheels, though not lit up there. The extensive array of lamps illuminates and animates to welcome you to the Acura.

The concept doesn't have a full cabin, but Acura's sketches show two layouts it calls instinctive drive and spiritual lounge modes. The first, Acura says, is meant to engage you with elements like racing-style gauges and red ambient lighting. In the latter, the yoke-style steering wheel retracts and transforms the cockpit into a space with soothing scents and restful animated projections.

Acura's cabin will have 100 per cent biomass leather and trim that includes recycled and sustainable materials. The aluminum used is recycled, and the wood is FSC certified and responsibly harvested.

The Acura Precision EV concept will roll onto the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance Concept Lawn in California on August 21. Expect the prototype model, how Acura labels its production-ready previews, late next year.
