2023 Jeep Compass Gets a New Turbo Engine, Standard AWD

Just a year after some major changes to the Jeep Compass, the brand is at it again. Jeep has dropped the model's 2.4L four-cylinder for a new engine, has added a new gearbox, made all-wheel drive standard, and has added some new driver assistance features and made some others standard across the line.

In 2022, Jeep updated the Compass compact crossover with an all-new face and a significantly refreshed interior. Part of the interior changes included a new optional 10.1-inch centre display and all models got a cabin more in keeping with the larger Jeeps.

For 2023, the old 2.4L four-cylinder engine and its nine-speed automatic have been replaced by a new 2.0L turbocharged four-cylinder and a smoother, more responsive eight-speed gearbox.

New output stands at 200 hp and 221 lb-ft, both significant increases over the old engine. Jeep says it has start-stop technology and that the turbo is designed to provide better response even on tough terrain. Hydraulic engine mounts absorb more vibrations, keeping them out of the cabin.

Before this year, Jeep offered a Compass with front-wheel drive and a six-speed automatic. That driveline is gone, so for 2023, every Compass gets all-wheel drive.

Standard across the board for 2023 are active lane management and full-speed forward collision warning with automatic emergency braking. A driver drowsiness detection system that monitors driver behaviour is new. Also new is a rear seat reminder that monitors the doors and ignition to remind you to check the back seat for any passengers left behind.

The 2023 Jeep Compass is expected to start arriving at dealers early next year. Expect fuel economy and pricing info closer to the on-sale date.
