The Hyundai Sonata has just debuted with a dramatic new look. The latest version of the midsized sedan embodies the company's increasingly edgy designs and knocks it out of the park. While the exterior redesign is the big news, there are big changes in store for the car's interior, too.
Midsized sedans might not be as popular as they once were, but with cars that look like this, maybe that trend can be reversed. The front end gets Hyundai's new front light signature, a look we've also seen on the upcoming new Kona. The headlights are wide set and nearly hidden, and it all sits above a much lower and more aggressive grille design.
The taillights are new, too. Or should we call that the tail light (singular) because it has the appearance of one single light bar running from side to side, like the front. Hyundai showed regular and sportier N-Line models, with the N-Line getting a more aggressive exhaust treatment and a rear lip spoiler.
Inside the Sonata is a curved panoramic display that combines two 12.3-inch screens into an elegant and simple layout. It's the first time Hyundai has done this screen layout with a curve. Previous dual-screen models like the Hyundai Palisade have the screens positioned flat.
Other cabin changes include a touch-type climate control system below the centre vents. Hyundai says it has boosted interior materials and added colour combinations to help make the sedan feel more premium. We can see some of those in the photos by way of the elaborately embossed seat bolsters and the thin-spoke steering wheel.
There's been no word on powertrains, but since this is a refresh and not an all-new vehicle, we don't expect much change under the hood. The current Sonata is offered with a 191-hp 2.5L four-cylinder, 180-hp 1.6L turbo four-cylinder, 290-hp 2.5L turbo four, and a 192-hp hybrid driveline.
Hyundai says the redesigned 2024 Sonata will launch globally on March 30.
