First Look: 2024 Hyundai Sonata Looks Almost Unrecognizable

Most midsize sedans coast along anonymously, like just another highway appliance.

Hyundai's Sonata is different. Although it's already a standout – with head-turning style, a luxurious cabin, and generous helpings of technology – the sleek four-door is getting a healthy redesign, with the 2024 Hyundai Sonata arriving with yet another nearly unrecognizable look.

"In the past 12 months, new buyers and owners seeking to stay in the sedan segment will find that Hyundai is there with beautifully-updated Sonata models," said José Muñoz, president and Global Chief Operating Officer of Hyundai Motor Company and president and CEO of Hyundai Motor North America.

An All-New Look

With hints from its smaller (and also-updated-for-2024) Elantra sedan sibling, the 2024 Sonata goes full Robocop-style with its new front-end looks.

Employing what Hyundai calls its Seamless Horizon Lamp, the 2024 Sonata gets wide-set hidden headlights, a new grille, and larger air intakes. Out back, the new H-for-Hyundai rear taillights add a high-tech character. The 2024 Sonata's sporty N Line trim also gets an enlarged front bumper grille, unique wheels, a rear spoiler, and dual twin-tip exhaust.

"We wanted to give (the) Sonata a more contemporary design statement," said Simon Loasby, head of the Hyundai Style Group. "It is super wide, fresh, modern, and very cool. Its low-slung design embodies our theme of Sensuous Sportiness, and its coupe-like styling makes this the most aerodynamic Sonata design ever. A true sports family sedan."

Nearly Luxury Interior

The existing Sonata's interior was already tech-laden and user-friendly. The 2024 update only enhances those qualities.

Inside the updated Hyundai's five-passenger cabin, there's a driver-centric layout with a new interior "floating" theme with ambient lighting. The most apparent change for 2024 is a curved display with an optional combined 12.3-inch driver information cluster and a 12.3-inch centre infotainment system. A new convenience feature is the Sonata's ability to be locked, unlocked, and started via an Android or Apple iOS smartphone or smartwatch.

Available AWD

Joining its Kia K5 corporate cousin and rivals like the Nissan Altima, Subaru Legacy, and Toyota Camry, the 2024 Sonata gets optional traction at all wheels with the returning 2.5L four-cylinder gas engine. In addition to the 2.5L unit, the N Line's 2.5L turbocharged four-cylinder and the 2.0L gas-electric hybrid continue for 2024 with front-wheel drive.

Final Thoughts

Expect the refreshed 2024 Hyundai Sonata to become available in Canada this fall. The automaker hasn't revealed new pricing yet. The base manufacturer's suggested retail price for 2023 models is $29,199.
