Porsche has revealed details of the third generation of its Cayenne crossover, which gets updated styling, a new cabin inspired by the Panamera fastback and a pair of turbocharged six-cylinder engines.
At the new model's launch next summer, the Cayenne will come in base and S trims. The entry-level model will use a 3.0L twin-turbo V6 Porsche says will generate 340 hp and 331 lb-ft of torque and deliver acceleration as quick as 5.9 seconds from 0-100 km/h, while the Cayenne S will get a 2.9L turbo six good for 440 hp and 406 lb-ft and capable of scooting this mid-size utility to three-digit speeds in as little as 4.9 seconds.
Chassis changes include staggered tire sizes that put wider rubber at the rear, a move Porsche says improves high-speed stability and handling; tire sizes range from 19 to 21 inches. As before, air suspension is available, and rear-axle steering joins the options list, promising both better handling in lane changes and tightening the car's turning circle at lower speeds.
A new 48-volt electrical system allowed the automaker's engineers to update the Porsche Dynamic Chassis Control adaptive suspension to electrical actuation, which shortens response times compared to the outgoing model's hydraulic system.
While all of those changes were conceived to improve the Cayenne's performance, another boost comes from a 55-kg weight reduction credited to the use of aluminum bodywork and a lithium-ion polymer battery that is 10 kg lighter on its own.
Inside, the new Cayenne gets a cabin centred around an all-new console and stack with a 12.3-inch touchscreen display and an infotainment system that allows voice control and a gauge cluster with two seven-inch displays. Tech options include night vision assist, lane change and lane keeping assist with traffic sign recognition, park assist with surround view and adaptive cruise control.
The 2019 Porsche Cayenne goes on sale next summer at $75,500 in base form, and $92,600 for the Cayenne S.
