Volvo is launching their first subcompact crossover. And in an unexpected turn for a Volvo, the XC40 is the most powerful in its class.
The all-new XC40 is also the first model to sit on the automaker's newest modular CMA platform. The platform will underpin Volvo's other 40 Series cars, including the sedan and future electrified vehicles.
Canada will get the T5 version of the XC40. That means a 2.0L turbo four that makes 250 hp and 258 lb-ft. Volvo calls it the "most powerful luxury compact SUV priced less than $40,000." More power than the BMW X1's 228, and well over the 208 of the Mercedes GLA and 200 hp Audi Q3. The T5 will come with an eight-speed automatic and all-wheel drive as standard.
Inside, the XC40 is loaded with storage space. Clever design means more (and more usable) storage areas in the doors, under the seats, and a removable waste basket in the center console. Options include a Harman Kardon stereo and that wonderfully bright lava orange carpet.
This is a Volvo, so it will be loaded with safety features. The XC40 will have Pilot Assist, City Safety, 360° camera, with more active safety features on offer.
The XC40 has bold styling, with Thor's Hammer headlights and a very wide C-pillar. It will have more colour choices outside, and a contrast-colour roof available.
The XC40 also introduces the automaker's new Care by Volvo subscription service. It's an all-in-one car subscription that covers insurance, taxes, fees, and other new-car costs. It bundles everything together, removes negotiation, and gives the customer a new car every 24 months. Other models and digital concierge services will follow. The service will start in Sweden, parts of Europe, and the US, with other markets to follow.
The XC40 will arrive in T5 Momentum and R-Design trims this Spring. Top-level Inscription trim will arrive in the summer.
