Porsche's upcoming first electric sedan has a new name. The Mission E is now the Taycan, Porsche confirmed today.
Before you worry that Porsche isn't Taycan care of business, the new name is actually pronounced tie-con. The automaker says that the names translates as "lively young horse," which is a reference to the prancing horse in their badge that you probably didn't notice before just now.
Like a horse, Porsche says the Taycan will be strong, dependable, and able to cover long distances. Porsche Chair Oliver Blume called it "strong and dependable; it’s a vehicle that can consistently cover long distances and that epitomizes freedom." Unlike a horse, the car won't run on hay. But it will run on electricity.
Make that gallop. The Taycan's pair of electric motors will output "over 600 hp" and launch the car to 200 km/h in under 12 seconds. Porsche also says that it has "a continuous power level that is unprecedented among electric vehicles." The big drain of maximum power can tax the charging (or discharging) system of an electric powertrain and hinder performance. Porsche says that it won't happen here. The expected range is more than 500 km on the somewhat generous NEDC test cycle.
To boost that range quickly, the car will have 800-volt charging technology. That means the car will be able to add as much as 100 km of range in as little as four minutes.
Porsche said it's planning to spend €6 billion on electromobility by 2022. That's double what it had originally planned. Of that, €500 million of that will go to Taycan variants, with €1 billion toward electrification and hybrid versions of the existing range.
At the Zuffenhausen HQ, Porsche has a new paint show and dedicated paint shop for the new car. It's also expanding an existing engine plant to build electric drivelines.
The Taycan is expected to go on sale late next year.
