Toyota has just revealed pricing for the refreshed 2020 Tacoma compact pickup and with the new look, extra safety tech, and updated infotainment system comes a big cut in price. Sort of.
This is a mild one when it comes to refreshes, but Toyota's changes for 2020 are good ones. It starts at the nose, with new grilles and wheel designs for most models that do a better job of visually distinguishing the different trim levels. Inside, both the standard 7.0-inch infotainment system and the up-level 8.0-inch version offer Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration. Toyota has also added Safety Sense P, the company's suite of active safety kit that includes frontal collision detection and mitigation, radar cruise, lane-departure alerts, and auto high-beams, to every trim level.
Despite all of that additional kit, Toyota's cut the base price of the Tacoma by $1,935. Or they've raised it by $5,625, depending on how you want to look at it.
We'll explain. It's because Toyota has dropped the four-cylinder from the lineup this year, as well as the two-wheel-drive options. So while you could get a four-pot 4x2 Access Cab in 2019 for $31,825, that model is gone for 2020. The new base model is the 278 hp V6-powered 4x4 Access Cab SR trim, which at $37,450 is nearly $2,000 less than last year's cheapest 4x4 V6 offering. A six-speed automatic is standard across the board with the exception of the TRD Off Road and Pro models, which can be had with a six-speed stick.
TRD Off Road models get a new grille, as well as new LED fog lights and smart key entry on the passenger door, and will also get the Multi-Terrain Monitor front cameras that let you see the ground in front of the vehicle. TRD Pro gets new power-adjustable seats, new LED headlights, a new lighter wheel design, and this year's special colour is Army Green.
