Why is Lamborghini's latest concept car pictured on the moon? Who knows. The more pressing question is why has this Gran Turismo game concept stolen the worst page from the Ferrari naming booklet and dubbed this new car the Lamborghini Lambo? Then again, when you look as crazy as this thing, does anything else really matter?
The Lamborghini Lambo V12 Vision Gran Turismo is the latest in a long line of Vision Gran Turismo concepts designed for the Polyphony Digital Playstation game. Audi, Peugeot, Bugatti, Jaguar, even Hyundai and Dodge have all taken a stab at making a cool car meant only to be driven in the digital world.
Lambo's Lambo was designed by the company's Centro Stile at its HQ in Sant'Agata Bolognese, and the car was unveiled in Monte Carlo, ahead of the 2019 FIA Certified Gran Turismo Championships World Finals. That's the series for the top Gran Turismo virtual drivers, and yes, it's a legit FIA championship.
It's a single-seater design, looking a little bit like the Egoista, but a whole lot more like some sort of space-age fighter jet. Not that it's all that unusual for a Lamborghini to look like something from another time or world, but this, as always, pushes that limit. The driver climbs into the cockpit from the front, and the small cabin is separate from the fenders. Six exhaust pipes are flanked by the massive Y-shape of the rear wing's ultra-thin taillights. Up front, the headlights show a similar Y signature. It's a similar light signature to the Terzo Millennio concept, though the rest of the vehicle makes that EV look dull in comparison.
Even though it's a car for a video game, it needs a powerplant, and it uses the driveline from the Sián FKP 37. It couples a 6.5L V12 with a supercapacitor-driven electric motor that propels the car with somewhere around 775 hp.
"The Lambo V12 Vision Gran Turismo is created to provide the ultimate virtual car for young fans and gamers, who are ultra-enthusiastic about Lamborghini and its futuristic aspirations,” said Mitja Borkert, Head of Lamborghini Centro Stile. ”It is an opportunity for the design talent within Lamborghini to stretch its wings and visualize a car that, like every Lamborghini, is a head-turner and the best driving experience, but also mirrors Lamborghini's push on future technologies, particularly in the arena of lightweight materials and hybridization.”
The best part of this one is that unlike most of these one-off concepts where the only way to drive one is to have boatloads of cash (and even then, you'll probably just let it sit in the garage collecting dust), this one will be available to anyone with a PlayStation 4 and Gran Turismo Sport starting this spring.
