BMW Canada is dropping the base M5 for the 2021 model year and will only be offering the upgraded M5 Competition going forward.
For 2021, the BMW M5 has been refreshed with visual tweaks including a revised grille, sharper LED lighting both front and rear, and more aggressive-looking front and rear aprons. The M5 Competition gets five additional colour options for 2021. The Competition model differentiates itself with black accents throughout, including the grille, exhaust finishers, mirror caps, spoiler, and more.
Inside, the touchscreen has been made a bit larger, now measuring 12.3 inches diagonally, and two new buttons have made their way from the M8 to the M5’s centre console, making it easier to access different settings and drive modes.
The BMW M5 Competition is powered by a twin-turbocharged 4.4-litre V8 that outputs 617 hp at 6,000 rpm and 553 pound-feet of torque between 1,800 and 5,860 rpm, an increase over the regular M5’s 600 hp. It gets power to all four wheels via an eight-speed automatic transmission, which gets BMW’s famous sport sedan to 100 km/h in 3.3 seconds, and from zero to 200 km/h in 10.8 seconds. BMW has made improvements to the engine’s lubrication and cooling systems, which should pay off at the track. Compared to the regular M5, the Competition model sits lower by 7 mm, gets upgrades to its suspension and chassis that makes it stiffer with new shock absorbers from the M8, and has increased camber at the front axle. It also gets configurable dampers with three modes: Comfort, Sport, and Sport+. A Track mode is also included.
The first deliveries of the updated 2021 BMW M5 Competition will be in August. The sport sedan starts at $121,000, a drop from 2020’s starting price of $125,754.
