The new GMC Hummer EV SUV is more than just a version of the Hummer EV pickup with a covered box. GMC has made it smaller for better manoeuvrability, fit it with a cargo door – instead of a hatch – that allows for full access to the back, given it a 3-kW generator and added some cool new tech to make taking an EV on the trail even easier than before.
GMC has revealed the new model's dimensions, and not only is it smaller than it looks, it is smaller than the EV truck. It slides in just under five metres long, 507 mm shorter overall than the pickup, with a wheelbase that is 227 mm shorter. To give you an idea of how it fits into the SUV segment, the Hummer EV SUV is about 100 mm longer than a Chevrolet Blazer and 250 mm wider than a GMC Yukon, making it wide but not all that large.
Combine that with the four-wheel steering and Crab Walk it should be extremely manoeuvrable on trail and also downtown. It should offer plenty of cabin space thanks to its wheelbase, which is longer than a Yukon's, and its lack of a traditional driveline. Cargo space with the seats folded is 2,316L, making it about the same as the three-row GMC Acadia. Access is aided by a swinging-hinged side-opening tailgate that opens wider than 90 degrees for easy loading and unloading of items that take up the full width of the cargo area.
All Hummer EV models offer Super Cruise hands-off driver assistance. The SUV will come with a 12.3-inch digital dash and 13.4-inch infotainment screen. The digital key feature allows drivers to use their smartphone to enter and start the vehicle.
Off-road widgets show you all of the off-road information you can think of including pitch and roll. A new trail mapping feature will show owners a catalogue of off-road trails, designed to be downloaded to your smartphone for locations without a network signal. Along with the trail mapping, the app provides estimates on how much charge you'll use on the trails. Those estimates will update as drivers take their vehicles off-road, meaning that you can head down a trail knowing you'll have enough range left to find another fast charger once you're done. 17 camera views are available, including two under-vehicle clearance cameras that will have washers to make sure they're usable even in muddy conditions.
The Hummer EV SUV will accept a charging rate of up to 300 kW using 800V DC fast-charging. The 20-module double-stacked battery offers 482 km of range. New for the SUV is an available Power Station generator that allows for 19.2-kW AC home charging (requires a 100A circuit), and can supply 25 amps at the household-standard 120V AC, or charge other EVs at 240V.
Total power offered ranges up to 830 hp with the three-motor models, and 625 hp on two-motor SUVs, with the power controlled through one-pedal driving if desired. The Hummer EV will come to a full stop using just the accelerator, with a Terrain Mode adding assistance from the service brakes to ensure one-pedal driving works even on the trail.
The SUV will get the removable roof like the pickup, and the rear glass drops into the tailgate to improve the open-air feel. Styling is nearly identical to the pickup, with the exception of the tailgate and cargo area cover, but it will debut a new Moonshot Green paint that will be GM's first factory matte finish.
GMC Hummer EV SUV deliveries are set to start in early 2023, with pricing from $88,898 for the base EV2 model to $125,898 for the Edition 1.
