New 2022 Mercedes-AMG SL 63 Coming to Canada with 4.0L V8, Soft-Top Roof

The new 2022 Mercedes-AMG SL 63 has made its official debut prior to its Canadian market launch next year.

Under the hood of the latest Mercedes-AMG SL 63 is a twin-turbocharged 4.0L V8 producing 577 horsepower and 590 pound-feet of torque. A nine-speed "multi-clutch" transmission sends power to all four wheels through a standard AMG 4MATIC+ all-wheel drive system, enabling the convertible to accelerate from zero to 100 km/h in just 3.6 seconds. The top speed is an impressive 315 km/h (195 mph).

The SL 63 is underpinned by a sophisticated five-link suspension setup in the front and rear. The "AMG Active Ride Control" hydraulic stabilization system comes standard, which uses active hydraulic elements to replace conventional mechanical roll bars. Active rear-axle steering is also standard, which steers the rear wheels in the opposite direction of the front wheels at speeds under 100 km/h to give the vehicle more responsive steering and a tighter turning radius. At speeds above 100 km/h, the front and rear wheels turn in unison with each other for improved grip and handling performance.

While this new SL 63 stays true to its predecessor with a long hood, sharply raked windshield, and short rear deck, there's one important change: the convertible roof. Whereas old SL models featured a folding hardtop, this new model has a lighter soft top, which is 21 kg lighter and lowers the vehicle's centre of gravity. Opening and closing the roof takes about 15 seconds and is possible at speeds up to 60 km/h.

Inside, the new SL 63 sticks with its familiar 2+2 seating layout but incorporates a large display screen running the latest generation of the Mercedes-Benz User Experience (or MBUX) infotainment system. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard.

At market launch, the Mercedes-AMG SL 63 will be available in 12 exterior paint colours, three soft-top roof colours, and three separate exterior design packages. There will also be five available wheel options, including aerodynamically optimized five-twin spoke 20-inch wheels and two different 21-inch AMG-branded wheels.

Pricing for the 2022 Mercedes-AMG SL63 is not yet available. More information on the luxurious sports coupe should become available as its Canadian market launch next year approaches.
