History/Overview
Pickup trucks have become some of the auto industry’s most popular vehicles, and on top of them all – sales-wise, at least – is the Ford F-150. Ford redesigned its full-size pickup into a new generation last year.
What’s New/Key Changes From Last Year
Following that generational change, the only notable update to the 2022 Ford F-150 is the discontinuation of its optional 3.0L Powerstroke diesel engine.
Available Trims
Ford offers the F-150 in XL, XLT, Lariat, King Ranch, Platinum, Limited, Tremor, and Raptor trim levels. There are nearly as many engine choices, including a 3.3L V6, 2.7L and 3.5L EcoBoost turbocharged V6s, a 5.0L V8, and a gas-electric hybrid powertrain that matches the 3.5L turbo with an electric motor. Your other choices are between rear- and four-wheel drive; regular, SuperCab and SuperCrew body styles; and short and long cargo beds.
Every F-150 uses a 10-speed automatic transmission.
Standard Features
XL trim starts out with black bumpers, steel wheels, and crank-em windows, but boasts the comfort of A/C, the convenience of an 8.0-inch touchscreen, and the safety of lane keeping assist and forward collision mitigation. XLT adds chrome bumpers, fog lights, power windows/locks/mirrors, and cruise control.
Lariat is where things get serious, with the addition of LED headlights, 18-inch alloy wheels, digital gauges, power-folding mirrors, climate-controlled seats, and passive keyless.
King Ranch brings adaptive headlights, power tailgate, 20-inch wheels, wireless phone charging, adaptive cruise and steering, a heated steering wheel, and heated rear seats.
In Platinum, you get surround-view cameras and active parking assist. Limited adds 22-inch wheels, and a dual-panel sunroof.
Tremor models add 18-inch wheels with all-terrain tires, and an off-road suspension. F-150 Raptor gains an even more capable suspension, and a high-output version of the 3.5L turbo engine.
Key Options
The Co-Pilot highway driving assist suite is among the F-150’s options, and you can add adaptive headlights, rain-sensing wipers, and LED taillights to certain trims with the 502A package.
An FX4 off-road package toughens up sub-Tremor trims for better performance in the rough.
Fuel Economy
The F-150 Hybrid is rated for 9.8/9.7 L/100 km (city/highway), or 10.3/10.0 L/100 km with 4WD. Gas-only models are rated starting at 12.1/9.4 L/100 km (city/highway) with the 2.7L engine and rear-wheel drive; 13.5/10.3 L/100 km with the 3.5L engine and rear-wheel drive; and 14.4/10.8 L/100 km for 5.0L/RWD trucks. Adding 4WD increases consumption nominally with all engines.
Competition
The Ford F-150 goes up against the Chevrolet Silverado 1500, the GMC Sierra 1500, the Ram 1500, and the Toyota Tundra.
