History/Overview
Six years ago, Ford made one of its biggest van-changes ever, bringing the Transit over from Europe to almost entirely replace the ancient E-Series van. Now for 2020, it gets a major refresh that includes two new engines, all-wheel drive, a heavily modernized interior with more new active safety features and work-ready new features like a power-activated sliding door.
Available Trims
The Cargo Van trim of the 2020 Transit is the only non-passenger version of the full-size van (there's a separate entry for the Passenger Van) but Ford does offer what it calls a Crew Van that is on the cargo side of the lineup with a second row of seating. The mobile jobsite version for a larger group of staff.
Cargo Van comes standard with a 3.5L V6 engine and rear-wheel drive and 16-inch steel wheels. Keyless entry is standard as is front AC, a cloth headliner, vinyl floors and two-way adjustable seats. There are cargo hooks and tie-downs as well as grab handles in the back. When it comes to safety, the Transit gets forward collision warning, post-collision braking, pre-collision braking, lane-keeping, and tire pressure sensors. The audio system is an AM/FM stereo with Bluetooth, a pair of USB inputs, and a 4.0-inch display.
The Crew Van is similarly equipped but adds a pair of windows for the second row as well as three more seats in that position. All get three-point belts.
Key Options
The options list is seemingly infinite with these vans. There are nearly 100 possible configurations including low, medium, and high roof as well as regular, long, and extended length vans. A 3.5L twin-turbo Ecoboost V6 is on offer as well. There are five axle rations including three with limited slip differentials and 10 different GVWR packages. And all-wheel drive.
Pick your van and you can add an interior upgrade package with full-height cargo area panels, power mirrors, upgraded sunvisors, cloth seats, and cruise control. The cargo area covering panels are available separately. Dual and power-sliding doors are offered and there's a package with a front camera to increase driver visibility.
Fuel Economy
The high weight rating of the Transit vans means that Ford isn't required to provide fuel economy estimates, so hasn't.
Competition
The most direct competition for the Transit is the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter, a similar Euro-style van that was brand-new last year and has been sold here for more than a decade. The Ram Promaster offers a similar larger rear layout. If you're looking for a more conventional large van, the Chevrolet Express and GMC Savanah are the two remaining choices, though they're the same vehicle with two names.
