History/Overview
The GMC Terrain is among the newer players in the long-established compact crossover class. It was introduced in 2010, but that was a decade later than the segment’s longest-running models, some of which have been around since the late 1990s. GMC redesigned the Terrain into a second generation in 2018.
What’s New/Key Changes From Last Year
For 2022, the GMC Terrain gets an update that freshens up its looks. GMC had planned this change for 2021, but the COVID-19 pandemic delayed things.
Available Trims
GMC offers the Terrain in SLE, SLT, AT4 and Denali trim levels. All are powered by a 1.5L turbo four-cylinder engine and a nine-speed transmission. AWD is included in SLT, AT4 and Denali, but is optional in SLE.
Standard Features
SLE comes with 17-inch wheels, LED head- and taillights, six-speaker audio, 7.0-inch touchscreen, power driver’s seat, dual-zone A/C, heated front seats, auto-dimming rearview mirror, and passive keyless entry.
Terrain SLE’s advanced safety items are forward collision alert and avoidance, lane departure warning, lane keep assist, pedestrian detection, and automatic high beams.
SLT adds 18-inch wheels, fog lights, hands-free tailgate, 110-volt power outlet, power front passenger seat, 8.0-inch touchscreen, ambient interior lighting, heated steering wheel, leather upholstery, and an integrated garage door remote.
AT4 models get 17-inch wheels.
Denali trim builds on SLT with 19-inch wheels, adaptive cruise control, automatic park assist, surround-view cameras, ventilated front and heated rear seats, blind spot monitor, lane change alert, rear parking sensors, safety alert seats, navigation, seven-speaker audio, head-up display, rear cross-traffic alert, and wireless phone charging.
Key Options
You can get a sunroof by adding an optional Pro Grade package. SLE, SLT and AT4 models can be had with a Pro Safety Plus pack with adaptive cruise, rear parking sensors, lane change alert, and blind spot monitoring.
In SLE and SLT, an infotainment package adds navigation; SLE also gets extra USB ports, and SLT adds a seven-speaker stereo.
SLT’s tech package brings surround vision, rear parking sensors, and a head-up display.
Fuel Economy
GMC estimates the Terrain’s fuel consumption at 9.2/7.8 L/100 km (city/highway) with FWD, and 9.6/8.3 with AWD.
Competition
The compact crossover field is a busy one that pits the Terrain against the Honda CR-V, Toyota RAV4, Nissan Rogue, Mazda CX-5, Ford Escape, Mitsubishi Outlander, Subaru Forester, Chevrolet Equinox, Kia Sportage, and Hyundai Tucson.
