2018 Infiniti QX60

The Infiniti QX60 continues to appeal to families with upscale aspirations as a seven-seat luxury crossover built around the same platform and powertrain as the Nissan Pathfinder.

Changes for 2018 include the elimination of a hybrid-powered model and the FWD gasoline-fuelled variant, leaving only an AWD model using a 3.5L V6 that makes 295 hp and 270 lb-ft of torque and comes connected to a continuously variable automatic transmission.

That engine was new last year as a follow-up to a 2016 styling update.

Despite its relative freshness, the QX60 faces some stiff competition in models that have seen more recent full redesigns, like the Acura MDX and Volvo XC90. Infiniti positions its entry towards the cushy end of the upscale three-row crossover class with a ride that favours comfort over sharp handling, in contrast to the like of the MDX and Audi Q7, which attempt to combine big-vehicle accommodations with small-vehicle handling dynamics.

Among our favourite traits of the QX60's drivetrain is a CVT that imitates the stepped shifts of a conventional automatic in heavy throttle applications to avoid a droning engine note. Still, we prefer the close ratios in the eight- and nine-speed transmissions that are becoming common in this vehicle category.

Standard equipment includes automatic HID headlights, sunroof, power tailgate, electric eight-way driver and six-way front passenger seats with heaters, leather upholstery, power-folding third-row seats, heated steering wheel, backup camera, six-speaker stereo and Infiniti's InTouch infotainment system.

Options are bundled into four packages. The Premium group includes an upgraded stereo, passive keyless entry, navigation, around-view monitor camera system, front and rear parking sonar and rain-sensing wipers.

A driver assistance package is where you'll find a few of Infiniti's active safety offerings, including radar cruise control, blind spot warning, backup collision intervention and auto-dimming side mirrors.

A deluxe touring group bundles 20-inch wheels, second and third-row sunroof, heated second-row seats, surround-sound stereo, hands-free tailgate, climate controlled front seats and maple interior wood accents.

Finally, a tech package brings lane departure warning and prevention, blind spot intervention and forward collision warning, and also includes everything in the driver assistance and deluxe touring groups.
