Maserati’s compact Ghibli sedan is something of a gateway drug for fans of Italian luxury cars. The Ghibli looks the part of an exotic sport sedan, but at prices not that much higher than what you’d expect to pay for a mid-size German luxury car.
What’s New/Key Changes From Last Year
For 2021, the Ghibli gets a better infotainment system with a 10.1-inch touchscreen. There’s also a new high-performance Trofeo variant that brings a significant power boost.
Available Trims
Maserati offers the Ghibli in base, S Q4, GranLusso, GranSport, and Trofeo trims. The Trofeo’s exclusive is a 3.8L turbo V8 engine, which replaces a 3.0L turbo V6 found in all other versions. An eight-speed automatic transmission is standard cross the board; base and Trofeo models are rear-drivers, but all S Q4 models have all-wheel drive.
Standard Features
Entry-level Ghibli models come with 19-inch wheels, bi-xenon headlights, a sunroof, heated front seats, a 10.1-inch touchscreen with navigation, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, front and rear parking sensors, and blind spot alert.
GranLusso trim gets chrome front-end trim, silk/leather upholstery, heated and ventilated front seats, a heated steering wheel trimmed in wood and leather, LED headlights and automatic high beams, a 10-speaker stereo, and black brake calipers with a white Maserati wordmark.
GranSport trim also builds on the base package, adding sport front and rear fascia, 20-inch wheels, red brake calipers, a performance suspension with electronic damping, 12-way power front sport seats, and a sport steering wheel with paddle shifters.
Finally, Trofeo’s additions include 21-inch wheels and its V8-based powertrain.
Key Options
In base models, there’s a GT sport pack with bigger wheels, sport fascia, red calipers, and gloss black wood trim. A driver assistance group brings adaptive cruise, 360-degree camera views, forward collision warning with auto braking, blind spot alert, and parking sensors.
A climate package adds heated windshield washers, heated rear seats, and a power rear-window sunshade.
To the Trofeo, you can add a carbon fibre interior package for the paddle shifters and door sills.
Fuel Economy
Maserati’s fuel consumption estimates for the Ghibli are 13.8/9.5 L/100 km (city/highway) for base and S trims, and 14.8/9.8 L/100 km for S Q4 models. The Trofeo’s ratings are 17.4/11.9 L/100 km (city/highway).
Competition
If the Ghibli has caught your eye, keep in mind it faces some serious competition among other sedans in the same price range. Those include the Audi A6/S6, the BMW 5 Series, Jaguar’s XF, the Mercedes-Benz CLS-Class and E-Class, and Volvo’s S90.
