History/Overview
The Mercedes-Benz GLE – formerly the M-Class, renamed in 2016 – is the brand’s mid-size, two-row SUV model. Benz redesigned the GLE into its current fourth generation in 2020.
What’s New/Key Changes From Last Year
There are no changes to the GLE for 2022, which, as before, is offered in conventional and coupe body styles.
Available Trims
The range starts with the GLE 350, powered by a turbo 2.0L four-cylinder engine; this powertrain is only available in the GLE SUV. From there, both SUV and coupe models can be had as the GLE 450, with a 3.0L turbo V6 with mild hybrid assist; and the AMG GLE 53 gets an upgraded version of the GLE 450’s engine. All powertrains include a nine-speed transmission and AWD.
Standard Features
GLE 350 starts out with 20-inch wheels, LED headlights, a sunroof, power-folding side mirrors with driver’s auto dimming, and a power tailgate. Inside, there are heated/power front seats, dual-zone A/C, electric steering wheel adjustments, 12.3-inch driver and infotainment displays, navigation, and smartphone integration.
The GLE’s basic safety package includes attention assist, blind spot monitoring, traffic sign assist, exit warning, and rain-sensing wipers.
GLE 450 adds a panoramic roof.
AMG GLE 53 gains 21-inch wheels, and performance-oriented transmission, brakes, AWD, and air suspension.
Key Options
In the GLE 350, a premium package adds a panoramic roof, garage door opener, passive keyless with hands-free tailgate, a heated steering wheel, upgraded audio, and 360-degree camera views. A premium plus option brings heated rear seats, rapid-heat front seats, and heated front armrests.
A tech package adds the MBUX interior assistant, head-up display, active headlights, and automatic high beams.
The comfort package brings ventilated front seats with massage, and an “energizing comfort” HVAC system.
Benz’s intelligent drive package brings evasive/active steering assists, forward collision mitigation, active blind spot/lane change/lane keeping assist, and radar cruise control.
Stand-alone extras include four-zone A/C, augmented reality navigation, power rear side sunshades, air suspension, active body control, a heated windshield, soft-close doors, and wireless phone charging.
In the AMG GLE 53, an AMG driver’s package gets a performance steering wheel and exhaust system, and unique wheels.
Fuel Economy
Mercedes-Benz’s fuel consumption estimates are 11.4/9.3 L/100 km (city/highway) for the GLE 450; 12.1/8.9 for the GLE 350; and 13.4/10.6 in the AMG GLE 53.
Competition
The GLE is one of a slew of mid-size luxury SUVs that also includes the Audi Q7/Q8, BMW X5, Porsche Cayenne, Volvo XC90, Cadillac XT6, Lincoln Nautilus, BMW X6, Jaguar F-Pace, and Land Rover Range Rover Sport.
