History/Overview
Mini's name and the design of its cars cast a huge shadow on the auto industry. Born as a stylish but functional city car in the 1960s, under its latest ownership the brand has gotten bigger but still trades on those two core features. This convertible version adds some more style at the expense of some function, but for many, those sacrifices are well worthwhile.
What's New / Key Changes from Last Year
This year shows no large changes. The models do not get the six-speed manual that is found in the hardtop cars.
Available Trims
Mini offers three levels of Convertible, the base Cooper, the Cooper S, and the John Cooper Works. The first has a 134 hp three-cylinder, the S gets 198 hp from a 2.0L four and the JCW has 228 hp from its four along with an eight-speed auto. The first two have a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission.
Standard Features
Base Cooper offers 16-inch wheels, leatherette seating, tilt and telescope wheel, and an 8.8-inch touchscreen infotainment display. Driving assistance includes dynamic cruise control.
Cooper S adds larger wheels, a hood scoop, and dual exhaust. Inside it adds sport seats. The John Cooper Works includes a body kit, special cloth seats and steering wheel. It also has LED lighting.
Key Options
Premier on Cooper adds wind deflector, heated seats, satellite radio, digital dash display, keyless entry, ambient lighting, and navigation with Apple CarPlay. Driver assistance includes front collision warning, speed limit info, and lane departure warning. Premier + adds 17-inch wheels, Nappa leather wheel, head-up display, and wireless phone charging.
The same packages are offered on Cooper S, but the leather wheel is included in the base package, not Premier +.
Premier + is offered on JCW and also includes special wheels, heated steering, and JCW trim.
Fuel economy
Cooper Convertible offers 8.4 L/100 km, 6.5 city. Cooper S is rated at 9.1/6.9, and John Cooper Works is estimated to return 9.4/7.1
Competition
The Mini Convertible is unique in that it has no direct competitors. The nearest would be affordable convertibles like four-cylinder Ford Mustang or the Jeep Wrangler.
