The Ram Promaster van is for buyers looking at hauling big volumes of cargo. Tools, boxes, people, this is a commercial van meant for business work. It's one of the Euro-style vans, like the Ford Transit. That gives it advantages over the Chevrolet Express like a lower floor, more interior space, a newer chassis, and better fuel economy.
The Promaster is available in 1500, 2500, and 3500 models, with the 3500 offered as a chassis cab. 1500 is available with two wheelbases and three roof heights. The 2500 comes in 136-inch and 159-inch wheelbases with the high roof, and the 3500 model comes with a 159-inch wheelbase and the high roof. That gives a maximum of 1,930 mm of headroom so that walking in and around to load and unload the cavernous 13,110L of cargo space. It has other work-van ready ideas like the high-mounted headlights and a three-piece front bumper. Both of those help reduce the cost of bumps and scrapes in urban driving.
Two engines are available for the Promaster, a 3.6L gas V6 and a 3.0L turbodiesel four. The V6 makes 280 hp and 260 lb-ft, with the diesel putting out 174 and 295. The gas engine is paired with a six-speed automatic, but the diesel has a six-speed automated manual gearbox. Properly equipped, these vans can tow up to 2,318 kg, but where they really shine is maximum payload. Just over 2,000 kg of stuff can go in the back of the vans, with racks and storage solutions available.
Two front seats are standard, but an expanded two-person passenger seat is available. Air conditioning is standard but can be removed to lower costs further. A rear heater is available. This is a work van, so it starts sparsely equipped, but it's not completely bare bones. Locks are power, with cloth seats and a vinyl floor. The steering wheel is telescopic, and the windows are power operated.
The options list includes more comforts, like power and heated seats, as well as seats that can swivel to face rearward. A WiFi hotspot is on the menu, as is satellite radio. A Uconnect infotainment system with 5.0-inch display is standard, with navigation available as an option. The large capacity of these vans means that fuel economy information isn't required or given.
