History/Overview
The Subaru Impreza is the only mainstream compact car with standard all-wheel drive available today, a fact that helps it stand out in a marketplace dominated by crossovers and SUVs. Notably, the Impreza also comes in sedan and hatchback body styles. This is the sixth year for the current-generation Impreza, which was introduced in 2017 and refreshed in 2020.
What’s New/Key Changes From Last Year
There are no changes to the Impreza for 2022. We’re curious to see whether Subaru has an all-new design in the works; we think it possible the company may drop the hatchback in the future due to its similarity to the Crosstrek crossover, which shares the Impreza’s underpinnings.
Available Trims
Subaru offers the Impreza as a sedan and hatchback in Convenience, Touring, Sport, and Sport-tech trim levels. All use a 2.0L four-cylinder engine, which is standard with a five-speed manual transmission in Convenience, Touring, and Sport trims. A continuously variable automatic (CVT) is optional in those three, and included in the Sport-tech package. As is Subaru’s way, AWD is standard across the line.
Standard Features
Convenience trim comes with LED taillights, 16-inch steel wheels with covers, fog lights, auto on/off headlights, 6.5-inch touchscreen infotainment, Apple CarPlay/Android Auto, four-speaker audio, A/C, power windows, and cruise control.
Touring models gain 16-inch alloy wheels, a front wiper de-icer, LED fog lights, a six-speaker stereo, Starlink connected features, automatic climate control, a 6.3-inch driver info display, heated front seats, heated/leather-trimmed steering wheel, passive keyless entry, and push-button engine start.
Sport models get 17-inch wheels, steering-responsive LED headlights, a sunroof, 8.0-inch infotainment, a power driver’s seat, premium cloth upholstery, blind spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and lane change assist.
Sport-tech adds 18-inch wheels, navigation, an eight-speaker audio system, dual-zone A/C, leather seating, rear automatic collision braking, and the EyeSight driver assist suite.
Key Options
Convenience, Touring, and Sport trims can be optioned with the EyeSight driver safety assist suite, comprising adaptive cruise control, lane keep assist, forward collision detection with automatic braking, and lead-vehicle start alert. Adding EyeSight to these trims also brings hands-free trunk opening to sedan models.
Fuel Economy
Subaru’s city/highway fuel consumption estimates for the Impreza are 10.1/7.5 L/100 km (sedan) and 10.1/7.7 L/100 km (hatchback) for manual-transmission cars, and 8.3/6.4 L/100 km and 8.4/6.6 L/100 km for sedan and hatch models with the CVT.
Competition
The Subaru Impreza’s closest competitor is the Mazda3, the only other compact that offers AWD. Others you should consider are the Honda Civic, Toyota Corolla, Hyundai Elantra, Nissan Sentra, and Kia Forte.
