Volvo's nod to the large luxury sedan segment is the S90, a car it introduced in 2017 to replace an aging model called the S80.
At its introduction, the S90 was a much better car than the S80, and Volvo bolstered that notion in 2018 by stretching the wheelbase by 12 cm. That nudged the S90 a bit closer to the industry's poshest big sedans like the BMW 7 Series and Mercedes-Benz S-Class, while making the Swedish brand more competitive with German mid-sizers like the 5 Series and E-Class.
For 2019, the S90 drops last year's T5 trim and powertrain combo. That makes the T6 the new starting point with its turbo- and supercharged four-cylinder making 316 hp and 295 lb-ft of torque. The step up from that is the T8, which adds a plug-in hybrid (PHEV) electric motor to the T6's engine for 400 hp and 472 lb-ft. Both powertrains use an eight-speed automatic transmission and AWD.
The S90 takes a different approach to electrification than most of Volvo's mid-size competitors, making a PHEV powertrain the only way to boost the car's performance. Contrast that to the BMW 530e, which offers performance more or less equivalent to the entry-level 530i model. If you want 400-ish hp in a 5 Series, you get a car with a bigger gas engine.
S90 T6 models can be had in Momentum trim, while T8 starts in Momentum trim and can be optioned to Inscription.
S90 T6 Momentum standard features include lane departure detection and prevention, adaptive cruise control, parking sensors, forward collision mitigation, four-zone automatic climate control, panoramic sunroof, leatherette upholstery, power adjustable front seats with lumbar, heated front seats, power-folding rear seatbacks, auto-dimming rearview mirror, LED headlights and 18-inch wheels.
Inscription trim adds ventilated front seats, Nappa leather upholstery, front seats with power-adjustable side bolsters and bottom cushion extension, active bending headlights with high-pressure cleaning and 19-inch wheels.
Volvo's fuel consumption estimates for the S90 T6 are 11.1/7.3 L/100 km (city/highway). The T8 is rated at 9.8/8.7 L/100 km when running as a gas-electric hybrid; its energy consumption estimate in electric mode is 3.2 Le/100 km.
