History/Overview
Introduced in 2010, the XC60 is Volvo’s entry in the compact luxury crossover category, where it has the unenviable task of going up against some of today’s most popular upscale vehicles. The current second-generation XC60 arrived as a 2018 model. The Recharge model you’re reading about here is a plug-in hybrid; the standard gas-only XC60 is covered in a separate buyer’s guide entry.
What’s New/Key Changes From Last Year
New for 2022 is an extended-range powertrain that nearly doubles the XC60 Recharge’s electric driving range on a fully charged battery.
Available Trims
Volvo offers the XC60 Recharge in Inscription Expression, R-Design, and Polestar Engineered trim levels. All are powered by a 2.0L four-cylinder engine with either turbocharging or both turbo- and supercharging.
Standard Features
Inscription trim starts out with two-zone A/C, digital gauges, power-folding/auto-dimming mirrors, 18-inch wheels, a panoramic roof, a 9.0-inch touchscreen, a power tailgate, power-adjustable/heated front seats with two-way lumbar, Google Android infotainment, and wireless phone charging.
Inscription’s safety package comprises blind spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, rear park assist sensors, lane keeping assist, oncoming lane mitigation, and road sign recognition.
R-Design adds 19-inch wheels, Nappa leather, power child safety locks, a garage door remote, four-way lumbar, front park assist sensors, a power driver’s cushion extension, and power-folding rear head restraints.
Polestar Engineered trim brings a heated steering wheel, headlight washers, a head-up display, a sport-tuned chassis, 360-degree cameras, side park assist sensors, 21-inch wheels, heated rear seats, and a Bowers & Wilkins stereo.
Key Options
You can option Inscription Expression to an uplevel package simply called Inscription, which adds front parking sensors, 20-inch wheels, a crystal shift lever, ventilated front seats with power side bolsters and a driver’s side cushion extension, a stitched dash, power child safety locks, a garage remote, and an upgraded stereo.
The premium pack upgrade (Inscription) adds a garage remote, power child safety locks, front park assist sensors, and power-folding rear head restraints.
A climate package (Inscription, R-Design) adds headlight washers, a heated steering wheel, and either heated rear seats or integrated booster cushions.
The advanced pack (Inscription, R-Design) brings driver assistance features, a head-up display, and 360-degree cameras.
Fuel Economy
Volvo’s energy consumption estimates for the XC60 Recharge Extended Range are 8.5/8.5 L/100 km (city/highway) when running as a gas-electric hybrid, or 3.5 Le/100 km in electric mode with 58 km of EV driving range. The Standard Range powertrain is rated for 9.7/8.7 L/100 km in hybrid mode, and 3.9Le/100 km on battery power, with 31 km of electric range.
Competition
The XC60 Recharge faces a smaller field than its more traditional gas-powered sibling. Among its competitors are the Lexus NX 450h+, Lincoln Corsair Grand Touring, Audi Q5e, and BMW X3 xDrive30e.
