Mazda MX-5 RF Production to Start with Special Launch Edition

When it rolled out at the New York auto show this spring, the Mazda MX-5 RF caught both attention and groans from the Miata faithful. Attention, because the Retractable Fastback sliding hard top is a beautiful change to the model, but groans for not being a full coupe. Well, the car is ready for launch, and Mazda is giving 1,000 customers the chance to buy a special Launch Edition model to celebrate.

The plan is for the automaker to e-mail selected customers giving them the chance to get their order in for the Launch Edition car. Regular orders and normal versions of the car won't be available until after those are spoken for, but that shouldn't take long.

The limited edition is based on the Grand Touring trim (US MX-5's have very different trim levels compared with Canadian cars), which is the top trim. It will come in the machine gray and auburn leather of the show car, with a black roof panel and special badges. The only option will be the choice of automatic or manual transmissions. The Launch Edition cars will also come with a custom-designed and numbered Tourneau watch so the lucky owners should never be late for the track.

The RF should arrive at dealers in the first quarter of 2017, but the Launch Edition is intended for the US only.
