Ram Issues Shifter Recall

Ram is recalling nearly 300,000 pickups due to a problem with the brake shift interlock. The problem could allow the truck to roll away if an accidental shift occurs.

The recall affects 290,200 Ram pickups from model years 2009 to 2017. It covers 1500 model trucks over that entire range, but other models have a slightly smaller window. The 2500 and 3500 series trucks are recalled from 2010 to 2017. The 4500 and 5500 series trucks are affected from 2011 to 2017.

The problem happens to trucks with a column mounted shifter. On those trucks, the device that prevents shifting out of park without pressing the brake or having the key in the ignition could become inoperative. If the interlock isn't working, the vehicle could be shifted out of park unintentionally. If that happens the truck could roll away and crash, causing injury or property damage.

As of the recall announcement, Ram didn't yet have a fix for the issue.
