Toyota and Subaru have added a combined 142,000 vehicles to the list of Canadian cars affected by the ongoing Takata airbag recall saga. The announcements follow the revelation that the embattled Japanese airbag maker has had to recall an additional 3.3 million faulty airbags worldwide.
All of the cars in question are from the 2009 model year. The affected Toyota vehicles include the Corolla, Matrix and Yaris and Lexus IS and ES 350 model. In Subaru's case, the campaign covers the automaker's entire 2009 model lineup and includes the Impreza (including WRX and STI variants), Forester, Legacy, Outback and Tribeca.
As in previous Takata recalls, the airbags need to be replaced because over time, humidity can infiltrate the airbag and degrade the propellant, a situation that can cause the airbag assembly to break up when it deploys (in the event of a severe enough crash) and send metal fragments into the car's cabin.
Takata and the affected automakers have been rolling these recalls out in stages, with some cars in hotter climates (like the southern U.S.) getting new airbags before those in cooler geographic regions.
The global recall affects most mainstream automakers but because of those meteorological and geographic considerations, not all of the affected cars will be recalled in Canada as part of this campaign. However, we do expect more manufacturers to announce additional Takata-related recalls in the coming weeks.
