Road-Ready BMW X2 On Display at Detroit Show

Today at the Detroit auto show, BMW revealed the production version of the X2, giving us the first look at the crossover inside and out. The X2 is the more stylish coupe version of the subcompact X1.

BMW presents the X2 as the edgier, more fashion-forward version of the X1. That means chunkier bodywork with prominent wheel arches linked by big plastic side skirts. Plus the side body line that arcs sharply toward the sloping roofline. It's 205 mm shorter and 70 mm lower than the X1 but rides on the same wheelbase. The short overhangs emphasize the low, wide, and sleek look.

The launch model in Canada is the X2 xDrive28i. That means a 2.0L turbocharged four-cylinder engine making 228 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque. The xDrive moniker is BMW-speak for all-wheel drive, and the only transmission option will be an eight-speed automatic.

On top of the standard car, there will be an M Sport X package. That will offer 19 and 20-inch alloys, a lowered M Sport suspension with available dynamic damper control, and unique interior trim featuring aluminum with a hexagon appearance. The Misano Blue paint of the original show cars will be exclusive to the M Sport, and all of the colour choices are picked to highlight the frozen grey metallic exterior cladding.

The X2 will be available with a colour head-up display, and all X2s will get BMW's black panel digital instrument cluster and information display. That display shows matte black with the car off, and only illuminates the instruments selected by the driver when the vehicle is turned on.

The X2 is expected to go on sale in March.
