McLaren Teases Three-Seat Hybrid Hypercar

British sports car maker McLaren has presented initial details of its next hypercar, which it says will be capable of a top speed exceeding 391 km/h -- the velocity achieved by the company's F1 model of the 1990s.

Known only by the codename BP23, McLaren says the car will be a gas-electric hybrid of which the company will produce only 106 examples, all of which have already been sold at a price approaching CAD$3 million (based on today's conversion rates from GBP1.6 million).

That limited production number is not arbitrary: McLaren says that's how many examples of the F1 it sold during that car's mid-1990s run.

Another F1 callback is the new car's three-place cockpit with a centrally located driver's seat.

McLaren says that each example of the new car will be tailored to its buyer's taste by the McLaren Special Operations division.

The car's name and its official top speed will be revealed closer to launch later this year, with production set to start at the end of 2019.
