Volvo Reveals All-New S60 Sedan

Volvo has just launched the all-new S60 sedan. It's the first vehicle that the automaker has built in the US, and the final piece of the company's 60 series lineup.

"The new S60 is one of the most exciting Volvo cars we’ve ever made, said president and CEO Håkan Samuelsson. And while just a decade ago that wouldn't have meant much, once-staid and boxy Volvo has been on a roll of handsome styling and wonderfully minimalist interiors, along with surprising dynamics.

In the styling department, the S60 is no different. Wearing sharp creases and stiff lines, as well as Volvo's now-signature Thor's hammer headlights. Inside, it continues Volvo's latest design themes and matches the already-revealed wagon.

Driving the S60 is a pair of turbocharged and supercharged hybrid powertrains. The T6 Twin Engine uses the twin-charged 2.0L four and electric motor that makes 340 hp. The T8 uses a version of the same that delivers 400 hp. Both are plug-in hybrids with all-wheel drive. The non-hybrid T5 turbo and T6 twin charged versions of the same engine will also be available.

Volvo says that the active chassis and drive modes make it one of the best sports sedans in the segment. They didn't go into chassis details, and that's a high bar to set, so when we drive one, we'll let you know how it ranks.

This is the first Volvo to be built in the US, at an all-new plant in South Carolina. Today's car launch also served as a factory opening celebration. But it's not the first time for a North American-built Volvo, as the automaker built cars in Nova Scotia from 1963 until 1998.

Since this is a Volvo, it will come with a vast array of available safety features. Like City Safety with Autobrake that can provide autonomous emergency braking for pedestrians, cyclists, and large animals. It will now brake for oncoming collisions, something Volvo calls a first in the segment. It has Pilot Assist, which supports steering, acceleration, and braking on the highway, and the system has been upgraded for better cornering performance. It also has off-road mitigation, oncoming lane mitigation, cross traffic alerts, and other steering assistance systems.

Production of the new 2019 S60 starts this fall, with sales to start shortly after.
