Chevrolet Wants You to Know Who's Biggest in Beds

Chevrolet wants you to know who's got the biggest beds of them all. They're so proud of the 2019 Silverado's new pickup box that they've even given it a name.

With the new for 2019 Silverado 1500, bed sizes are getting bigger. The standard bed is up 283 litres to 2,039 L of total space beneath the rails. Short and long-box trucks are up too. The short bed climbs 284 L to 1,784 and the long box is up a whopping 396 L to 2,520. That means the long box truck gains more cargo space than the entire trunk size of a 2018 Chevy Cruze Premiere.

Where did the extra space come from? Not by just raising the bedsides, a method that makes it harder to reach in over the side of the box. Chevrolet says the bed is only about 20 mm higher, and that most of the extra space comes from widening the bed floor. It's 178 mm wider, nearly 10 percent, across all three sizes.

That makes the standard box 283 L larger than the 2019 Ford F-150 and Ram 1500. The long box is 340 L larger than the F-150's. Ram hasn't yet released the long-bed 2019 model. It's also built of a higher tensile strength steel than before, 500 MPa vs 340.

To help make sure your cargo isn't bouncing to the left and to the right, it has 12 fixed tie-downs. Each is able to hold 227 kg of force before bending, nearly double the old truck. Nine more movable tie-downs are available. The new bed also has available multi-angle LED lighting and an optional 110-volt power outlet.

"We’ve added so many features and benefits that it deserves its own name – Durabed," said full-size truck Chief Engineer Tim Herrick. The Durabed, not to be confused with the composite bed that GMC has revealed, is also available with four tailgate options. A boring old standard gate, a standard gate with lift assist, a power locking version, and a new power up and power down tailgate that will be available on LTZ and standard on High Country trims.

The 2019 Chevrolet Silverado goes on sale this fall.
