Mazda's MX-5 is getting extra power for 2019. It's getting some shuffled trim levels too, which means the base model is now better equipped for a slightly higher price than before.
The MX-5 roadster's 2.0L four is getting a 26 hp boost to 181 hp and 151 lb-ft. That's thanks to freer breathing and a raised redline. It's also getting a telescoping steering column to help improve driver comfort. But the big changes might be in the trims.
The old GX base model is gone, it's been replaced by the GS. It still has push-button start, AC, and LED lights, but it now adds smart city brake support, lane departure warning, automatic high beams, and a rear-view camera to the list of active safety features. The GS is $1,000 more than last year's GX, with the new GS-P trim $900 more than the 2018 GS.
In the mid-range, the GS gets a P package that is mostly last year's GS model. It adds a Bilstein-damped sport suspension, limited-slip differential, strut tower bar, and 17-inch alloys to the base car. The extra sport features come with creature comfort additions too, including a nine-speaker Bose audio system, navigation, and leather interior trim. A Sport Package for the GS-P adds 17-inch BBS wheels, Brembo front brakes, and leather and Alcantara-trimmed Recaro sport seats. At the top of the line, the GT adds automatic climate control, 4.6-inch colour gauge cluster display, leather seating and roof liner, and adaptive headlights. The GT can now be had with a dark cherry or new brown colour roof.
The RF retractable hardtop is available in GS-P and GT trims. The RF GS-P can be had with the Sport pack, but the RF GT gets some special additional options. The Exclusive Package adds a piano black hard top and brown leather seating. The Grand Sport adds those touches to the BBS alloys and Brembo brakes of the GS-P sport pack.
The 2019 Mazda MX-5 and MX-5 RF go on sale in September.
