Hyundai has revealed official images of the 2020 Sonata, the eighth generation of the brand's family sedan, sporting a dramatic new look.
Hyundai did not present the new car at the Geneva auto show, but the announcement comes a year after the 2018 Geneva reveal of Hyundai's Le Fil Rouge concept. That was the first showcase of the Sensual Sportiness design language that informed the latest Sonata's styling.
The new Sonata looks larger than its predecessor, but that's not just a trick of the new look. Hyundai says the car is 25 mm wider, 45 mm longer, rides on a wheelbase stretched 35 mm, and stands 30 mm lower.
Sonata's LED daytime running lights go partway up the hood. Their party trick, when turned off, is transforming into chrome strips that flow into the car's side window trim.
Inside, Hyundai calls out a dashboard whose shape the automaker says was inspired by a stealth fighter jet. We don't see the resemblance, but it looks pretty posh nonetheless. One thing that caught our eye is the digital gauge cluster. It looks a lot like something out of a BMW, along with a tachometer than runs counter-clockwise, a la Aston Martin Vantage. The console also sports push-button controls for the automatic transmission.
Hyundai has revealed nothing about the new Sonata's powertrains. We'd count on a 2.0L turbo four-cylinder once again being the top gas engine. Surely Hyundai will have designed this car to accommodate its latest plug-in hybrid technology as a follow-up to that option in the current Sonata.
Hyundai has yet to set a firm on-sale date for the 2020 Sonata. Hyundai Canada public relations specialist Jean-Francois Taylor said the car should arrive here near the end of this year.
