They say it's not easy being green. But when you look at the new Grabber Lime paint that Ford has just relaunched for the 2020 Mustang, it suddenly doesn't seem all that hard. Especially on the new GT500's high-downforce "swing" and massive nose.
Grabber Lime isn't the only new colour coming to the Mustang for 2020, although the 1970s-inspired colour paint seems appropriate just before St. Patrick's Day. "It’s lime green on steroids,” said Barb Whalen, Ford colour and materials manager. “This colour traces back to a Mustang heritage colour while bringing it forward with more modern, dynamic pigments and bold new energy.”
It's not the only new feature colour for 2020. There will also be a Twister Orange that we're not getting pictures of just yet. New Iconic Silver and Red Hot Metallic round out the colour wheel.
That's not the only 2020 Mustang news, though. Ford is talking aero and the 2020 GT500. The design team used digital prototyping and new 3D printing methods to let them make or break ideas more quickly. "We created and studied designs among the engineering teams and proved out different strategies long before we built our first prototype cars,” said Matt Titus, Ford Performance vehicle engineer. “Not only did this improve the effectiveness of the designs, it dramatically reduced the time it took to develop the GT500 – and the costs associated with that."
Ford says that at full gallop, the Shelby GT500's 700+ horses shed 230 kw of heat (enough to heat a dozen homes). The brakes add another 100 kw at max whoa. They tested more than 500 cooling and aero designs in 3D to maximize performance and cooling. Six heat exchangers, a doubled in size front opening, and a 600-watt fan help keep things cool under pressure.
The new rear spoiler/wing hybrid is called "the swing." With the optional Handling Pack and Guerney Flap installed, the aerofoil adds 172 kg of downforce for a total of 250 kg. Though that's all at 292 km/h.
The 2020 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 goes on sale in the fall.
