Ford has debuted its first-ever fully electric dragster prototype, the Mustang Cobra Jet 1400 the day after Earth Day.
Ford Performance says the purpose-built dragster will demolish the quarter-mile in the low eight-second range at more than 170 mph. Although it’s just a one-off creation, it could be a sign of things to come as the American automaker considers adding more electric vehicles to its lineup. The 1400 name comes from the fact the battery-powered Cobra Jet is projected to output 1,400 horsepower and 1,100 pound-feet of instantly available torque.
The Cobra Jet name has been around the drag race scene since the late 1960s and is typically powered by a howling V8. The dragster's use is restricted to drag strips and is not street legal.
“Electric powertrains give us a completely new kind of performance and the all-electric Cobra Jet 1400 is one example of pushing new technology to the absolute limit,” said Dave Pericak, Global Director, Ford Icons, in a press release. “We’re excited to showcase what’s possible in an exciting year when we also have the all-electric Mustang Mach-E joining the Mustang family.”
The Mustang Mach-E crossover made waves last year as a full EV inspired by Ford’s famous muscle car. Many enthusiasts were upset that the electric car used the Mustang name, and while they weren’t against the idea of an electric car in general, many maintain it shouldn’t be attached to the pony car name and badge.
The Ford Cobra Jet 1400 is scheduled to make its public debut later this year at a drag racing event where people can see the completely silent yet extremely quick dragster in action.
