For 2023, Mazda is making some small changes and doing some content shuffles on the Mazda3 and Mazda3 Sport hatchback. Additions include a few more horsepower and a fuel economy boost on non-turbo 2.5L models, but that engine will be available on fewer trims. Instead, the 2.0L engine is now standard on the GS-trim. Pricing remains very similar to last year with a base price increase of $200.
Mazda's Skyactiv 2.5L naturally aspirated four-cylinder gets a rework for 2023 that includes updated cylinder deactivation tech to improve fuel economy. It's now estimated to deliver 8.4 L/100 km city and 6.4 highway, versus 8.9 and 6.5 last year. Other changes to the engine give it more power, up five horsepower to 191. Torque stays the same at 186 lb-ft.
For 2023, though, the 2.5L engine is no longer standard on GS trim cars. Both the sedan and hatchback will get the 155-hp 2.0L four-cylinder as standard instead. An updated fuel economy figure wasn't given, but Mazda said it should do better than the 8.4 city, 6.6 highway combined rating for 2022. Hatchbacks get a six-speed stick as standard, the sedan has a six-speed auto.
The change means that a 2023 Mazda3 GS 2.0 sedan is $25,400, which is the same price as the 2.5L car from last year. Buyers who want AWD can still get their GS trim car with the 2.5L engine and that system, for $27,900 instead of $27,400.
All Mazda3 models get the brand's driver assistance suite that offers blind spot monitoring, rear cross traffic alert, and two years of Mazda connected services as standard equipment.
2023 Mazda3 Sport hatchback models are set to hit dealers in the fall, with the sedan not arriving until winter.
