All-New 2024 Lexus GX Debuts as Big, Boxy Off-Roader

Though the Lexus GX name has been on the market since 2002, there have only been two different generations of the model. That's what makes the 2024 Lexus GX such a big deal: It's the long-awaited third-generation GX, and it is almost a caricature of the previous ones, but in the best ways possible.

Up front, the new Lexus GX wears a variation of the Lexus Spindle Grille that is far from familiar. The shape we know is there, but the grille is much more upright and rugged than before, especially when combined with the squat headlamps that scream durability over luxury intricacy.

The rest of the GX is equally blocky. It's a look that screams off-roader to the point where it's almost cartoony, but that doesn't seem to have any impact on what's underneath.

The GX is a truck-based Lexus, which is how it is able to offer an impressive new 8,000-pound tow capacity along with serious off-road capability. The platform underneath is shared with the flagship LX, and Lexus touts its strength and light weight.

The new frame allowed Lexus to add a double-wishbone front suspension and multi-link rear setup that give the GX better on-road handling as well as off-road performance. Adaptive Variable Suspension is available to improve the ride even further.

The three-row GX grows 60 mm in the wheelbase and 70 mm overall. This should add more space for both passengers and cargo, while a new A-Pillar and lower beltline should improve visibility for driver and passengers.

A completely new cabin holds a standard 14.0-inch centre screen. The system has physical controls for important functions, as well as for off-road modes. It has wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, and the GX has a 12.3-inch digital dash cluster. Lexus will also offer its signature luxury options including a 21-speaker audio system.

The 2024 Lexus GX will come with just one powertrain to start, the new 3.4L twin-turbo V6 and 10-speed automatic transmission. This engine delivers 349 hp and 479 lb-ft of torque, with both well ahead of the last-generation's V8. Full-time 4x4 is standard, as is a Torsen limited-slip centre differential. Lexus says switching into 4hi is quicker than before thanks to an improved transfer case.

Lexus says it will offer a hybrid model down the road, but did not say when. Expect some variation of the 409 hp and 479 lb-ft system that uses this same gas engine and is used in the LX 600.

Lexus is launching a new Overtrail grade for the GX 550. This GX has a locking differential as well as 33-inch all-terrain tires on 18-inch wheels, black fender flares, and standard skid plates. An Overtrail+ trim adds massage seats for driver and front passenger.

The Overtrail's other off-road features include multi-terrain select, crawl control, downhill assist control, and 3D multi-terrain monitor as well as Electronic-Kinetic Dynamic Suspension.

Standard driver assistance features include a pre-collision system with pedestrian detection, full-speed adaptive cruise control, lane departure alerts, and more. Lexus didn't mention any safety features that weren't part of the standard list.

The 2024 Lexus GX 550 is set to go on sale early next year. Expect pricing right around the same time the new SUV arrives in Lexus showrooms.
