2024 Mercedes-AMG GLC Coupes Get Four-Cylinder Engines, Up to 671 Hp

Mercedes-Benz has just revealed the coupe versions of its latest AMG GLC models. Like their more upright siblings, the 2024 Mercedes-AMG GLC 43 and 2025 GLC 63 S E Performance will get four-cylinder power with an extra electric boost, but they'll do it in a better-looking body.

The heart of the two big AMG GLC Coupe models is a turbocharged 2.0L four-cylinder engine. It's not the six or eight-cylinder options the AMG models got before, but buyers might not miss the difference.

With just the turbo 2.0L four-cylinder engine, the GLC 43 makes 416 hp. If 31 hp over the old V6 isn't enough, a 48-volt electric motor adds 14 hp and boosts the GLC's fuel efficiency thanks to the ability to shut off the engine while coasting and waiting at stop lights or in traffic.

In the 2025 Mercedes-AMG GLC 63 S Coupe, the 2.0L turbo-four makes an astonishing 469 hp. It's the most powerful production four-cylinder in the world, and it manages 402 lb-ft of torque. Add the 201-hp rear-mount electric motor, and you get a total of 671 hp with 752 lb-ft, enough to hit 100 km/h in 3.5 seconds.

AMG says this electric motor and the battery that goes with it use tech inspired by its winning Formula 1 race cars. The motor can only output its full 201 hp for 10 seconds at a time, but it can always make 107 hp, making total system output 671 hp.

The GLC 63 S is a plug-in hybrid, with its 6.1-kWh battery able to be recharged by the engine, or with a 3.7-kW on-board charge unit. The estimated electric range is 12 km, letting you run short distances without using gasoline.

Both models use an AMG-tuned nine-speed multi-clutch automatic transmission with a wet clutch for starting. Without a torque converter, the transmission is lighter, and Mercedes says it is more responsive.

The hot and hotter versions of the GLC Coupe have AMG Ride Control steel spring suspension with adaptive dampers. The AMG-tuned shocks are meant to allow comfort and handling depending on the drive mode selected, with AMG-specific suspension components to help allow sharper handling. Active roll stabilization, which uses electric actuators to adjust the anti-roll bar stiffness, is standard on the 63 S version. Rear axle steering is also included in both versions.

Other AMG-specific features include four-piston front brakes on the GLC 43 Coupe and six-piston calipers on 390-mm front rotors on the 63 S. The big brakes should allow short stopping distances and be highly resistant to fade under repeated heavy braking. Mercedes says the system should last longer before needing service, too. When you're not stopping, an AMG exhaust system makes the most of the sounds coming from the four-cylinder engines.

AMG has worked on the styling of the GLC Coupe models, with the pair each wearing unique versions of the AMG grille and nose. The changes set them apart from both the non-AMG versions and each other. Both 20-inch and 21-inch wheels are available, and each model has its own rear-end look, including round tailpipes on the 43 and trapezoidal ones on the 63 S.

Inside, AMG has fitted its performance seats with multiple microfibre fabric options. An AMG steering wheel trimmed in Nappa leather is standard and has AMG drive unit buttons for quick mode changes and a flat bottom to look cool.

Both models, the 2024 Mercedes-AMG GLC 43 Coupe, and the 2025 Mercedes-AMG GLC 63 S E Performance Coupe, should arrive at dealers in 2024. Expect pricing closer to their arrival.
