2025 Ram 1500 Updated With New Engines, Ramcharger Debuts as 'Unlimited EV Range' PHEV

The 2025 Ram 1500 pickup is getting some huge changes. Ram is dropping the legendary Hemi V8 in favour of its new Hurricane inline-six engines. The company is also launching a new Ramcharger model with a 92-kWh electric battery, a gas-powered generator, and 663 hp.

Two new Hurricane 3.0L I6 engines, which debuted in the Wagoneer line, will live under the hood of the Ram 1500 for 2025. A base version that makes 420 hp with 469 lb-ft and a High Output variant that does 540 and 521. That gives both of them more power and torque than the 5.7L V8 they replace.

Ram will continue to offer its 3.6L V6 for entry-level trucks. That engine has eTorque mild hybrid assist and will likely make the same 305 hp and 269 lb-ft as last year. All versions of the truck get an eight-speed automatic transmission.

Then there's the 2025 Ram 1500 Ramcharger. Ram says it offers "unlimited battery-electric range," though that's a bit of a misleading claim.

The truck gets two electric motors, one in front and one in back, and a 92-kWh battery pack. That gives it 663 hp and 615 lb-ft of torque and should offer plenty of electric range (there's no official estimate yet). You can plug the Ramcharger into a Level 3 fast charger and add around 80 km of range in 10 minutes

But the Ramcharger will also come with the "Ram charger," a version of the 3.6L V6 that will be used solely to charge the battery pack through a 130-kW generator. It's thanks to this engine that Ram says the truck will have unlimited range.

Think of it like the biggest PHEV battery pack of all, and you'll get the idea. Even if Ram shies away from the "hybrid" label, the battery pack can keep recharging as long as there's gas in the tank. When it runs out, you can fill up at the gas station. With a full tank, Ram expects around 1,100 km of range. Peak towing is 14,000 lbs and it has a payload of 2,625 lbs.

The Ramcharger gets a different frame, designed specifically for EVs. It will have 7.2 kW of onboard power for running worksites or powering your house. Aside from those changes and the electrified powertrain, it's largely the same as other Ram trucks.

Gas Rams can tow up to 11,580 lbs, leaving them lagging behind the Ramcharger. They'll offer 2,300 lbs of payload, again slightly under the heavier electrified truck.

Every 2025 Ram 1500 gets a new cabin that includes an improved 12-inch centre screen or an even bigger 14.5-inch display. Ram also adds a 10.25-inch screen for the passenger, making it the first pickup with that second screen. The 14.5-inch screen will be standard on the Ramcharger.

Other cabin improvements include updated materials, premium textures, and other luxury touches. New finishes include metals, carbon fibre, and open-pore wood. Dual wireless phone chargers will be available, and the Ram will offer an available digital key.

A new Tungsten trim tops the Ram 1500 line. It gets a special indigo interior, patina'd metal accents, and 24-way power-adjustable front seats. The Tungsten trim will have a special badge with diamond knurling and a 23-speaker Klipsch audio system.

Ram has updated the exterior, though the changes are small. New grilles, new lights, and an optional power tailgate make up the most noticeable improvements.

The 2025 Ram 1500 is set to go on sale in the first quarter of 2024. Ram didn't announce when we can expect the Ramcharger models to arrive. Pricing will come later when the new trucks begin to arrive at dealers.
