Watch: Taiwan Earthquake Sends Boulders Crashing Down on Highway

One of the most dramatic dashcam videos we've ever seen shows the aftermath of an earthquake in Taiwan. The unexpected rockfall shows how being aware of what's happening around you is crucial and could help save your life.

Earlier this week, Taiwan suffered from the largest earthquake the country has seen in 25 years. The magnitude 7.4 quake caused widespread damage, prompted tsunami warnings, and at least four people were killed.

This dashcam video was captured in Xiulin Township, along a mountainous stretch of Taiwan's east coast. The camera car is pulling away from a traffic signal just after exiting a tunnel and crossing the Daqingshui River.

Just moments after the cars start to climb the mountain, the earth begins to shake. Suddenly, the car ahead begins to reverse quickly.

The camera car is slower to react, backing more slowly down the road in starts and stops.

Then we see why the lead car is reversing as boulders begin to tumble down the mountainside. Rocks as large as a car and tumbling quickly come crashing across the roadway. The lead car is struck by one of these massive rocks.

Once the camera car sees the devastation, the driver suddenly starts backing up more quickly. They, and the other cars on the road, narrowly escape being smashed by the massive rocks.

There is no word on the condition of the occupants of the smashed car, though as the main passenger area appears intact, we're hopeful for the best.
