A Ferrari LaFerrari sold on December 3 at an RM Sotheby's charity auction in Daytona, Florida went for $7 million, making it the most expensive 21st-century car ever sold at auction.
While this proves people continue to be willing to spend ridiculous amounts of money on exotic cars, the best part of this story is that $7 million is going to help victims of an August earthquake in central Italy that killed nearly 300 people and caused widespread destruction. The auction was arranged by RM Sotheby's and the National Italian American Foundation’s Earthquake Relief Fund.
The 950 hp hybrid LaFerrari was special enough thanks to a combination of fantastic performance and a production run of 499 units.
Making this particular car even more desirable, then, was that it was a 500th example RM Sotheby's says was destined for Ferrari's private collection before Ferrari CEO Sergio Marchionne announced it would be auctioned off for charity. It sports unique touches like an Italian flag on the hood, and a commemorative plaque in a "one-of-a-kind" interior.
The LaFerrari's original MSRP was around US$1.3 million.
